On January 31, 2026, MLA marked the 167th anniversary of the historic St. Johns River Lighthouse with a community celebration honoring the lighthouse’s enduring legacy and the shared commitment to preserving it for future generations.
Constructed in 1858 and first lit on January 1, 1859, the St. Johns River Lighthouse remains a powerful symbol of the area’s maritime heritage. The anniversary gathering brought together supporters, neighbors, and local partners to reflect on the lighthouse’s history, share updates on preservation efforts, and celebrate the growing momentum behind the MLA’s mission.
During the event, we shared highlights from the past year and outlined next steps in our multi-phase preservation initiative to relocate and restore the St. Johns River Lighthouse.
The afternoon celebration was both reflective and forward-looking. Guests enjoyed time to connect with one another, view highlights of MLA’s exciting 2025, and hear updates from the MLA Board about the progress made over the past year.
We shared milestones in our preservation journey, welcomed new members, and expressed gratitude for the many volunteers, partners, and supporters who continue to move this effort forward. The energy in the room was a powerful reminder that preservation is not a solitary task, but a collective one rooted in community pride.
Special Guest Speaker: Tamara Anne Floyd
Tamara Anne Floyd joined us to celebrate the life and legacy of her mother, Helen Cooper Floyd, an award-winning columnist and one of the most important voices in preserving the history of Mayport Village. Fittingly, today is Helen Cooper Floyd’s birthday.
Born in Mayport Village in 1922, Helen devoted her life and career to documenting the people, stories, and spirit of this fishing community she loved so deeply. From becoming one of the first women with a byline at The Jacksonville Journal to authoring books on Mayport history, her work continues to shape how this place is remembered and understood.
We invite you to watch, reflect, and take a moment to learn more about a woman whose words helped preserve the soul of Mayport Village for generations to come.
